Hello! Have you eaten?
I'm Jolene, a Singaporean Stay-At-Home-Mother living in Houston, Texas. And I am here to share with you some of my food, lifestyle and fashion adventures as a Singaporean Texan.
Singapore is a diverse and multi-cultural country, whose food is viewed as a national identity. Houston, being a multi-cultural city as well, is considered to have one of the most dynamic and diverse food scene in the nation.
If you love variety, bold flavors, enjoy eating as a past time and have a food obsession, you will feel right at home here. I will be exploring Singaporean recipes that are influenced by the Chinese, Malays, Indonesians, Indians, Peranakans and many more. Hence, making them uniquely Singaporean! AS well as the fascinating variety of cuisines in Houston that I have grown to love and appreciate.
Join me as I cook, savor and immerse myself in the vast culinary experiences, culture, heritage and fashion this world has to offer
Back in 2009, my husband was offered an overseas assignment in Houston, Texas. I was initially apprehensive and hesitant to leave our family and friends, but was also excited about the adventures and possibilities that awaited us. So, we took a leap of faith, packed up our lives in Singapore and moved to Houston with our then 14 month old daughter in the following year. In a blink of an eye, we have been here since January 2010, and we are now a family of 5 - my husband Kian, myself, our 13 year old daughter Isabella (we call her Bella), our 8 year old son Jamie and our adopted pet dog Tripoli.
It took me a while to readjust and settle in when we first got here. And when I finally did, I realized that apart from missing our family and friends, we missed Singaporean food too. There are a few Asian restaurants here that served some Singaporean and Malaysian dishes and they are good. However, Singaporean cuisine is so vast that it is impossible to have them all in one menu. And we happened to miss a lot of those dishes not on the menu. So, I decided to give it a go at making those dishes. And being adventurous, I also started exploring other cuisines that I've been exposed to living here. I would often post pictures of what I made on social media and friends and family would always suggest that I should start a blog. So, with much encouragement from Kian, I have taken the plunge into the blogging world and have been doing so for 5 years now.
I am Miss "Crumbs-A-Lot", an endearing nickname given to me by Kian because he once caught me eating, thoroughly enjoying what I was eating apparently, and dropping crumbs all over myself without realizing it. And that nickname stuck and is being re-enforced constantly by our children. For when they crumb while eating now, Kian simply goes, "I wonder where they get that from, Miss Crumbs-A-Lot?"
I hope you'll enjoy reading my blog as much as I do writing it and sharing what I deem as my online diary/scrapbook. Do reach out if you have any suggestions, feedback or comments. I'd love to connect with you!
